The Aspen Airport

Aspen Airport

If you love skiing or would like to learn the sport, chances are, Aspen Colorado is on the top of your list of places to go to. The City of Aspen is not just a world-class skiing destination that is great for all skiing skill levels, it is also where the Winter X games are held, plus the home of the rich and famous reside. In addition, it offers other outdoor activities for the family such as white water rafting on the Colorado and Roaring Fork Rivers, trout fishing, horseback riding, biking, paragliding, and ballooning.

To get to the city, the quickest way is by air. Many people call the city’s airport, the Aspen/Snowmass Airport or Sardy field. Its official name, though, is the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport. The best thing about this airport is that it takes passengers so close to the ski lifts as well as the city’s popular shops and restaurants that they only have to wait a several minutes to actually start their vacation.

However, the Aspen/Snowmass Airport has a non-standard runway, so only small aircrafts (those with wingspans over 29 meters), such as those that seat less than a hundred passengers, are allowed to land there. Couple this with the large amount of tourists; getting everyone into and out of the city by air requires a lot of flights. All these flights must also be completed between 7am and 11 PM for safety. All of these contribute to making the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport one of the busiest airports in the state.

Despite the airport’s limitations, it is the frequented by many private jets as well as commercial and military planes. Numerous commercial airlines fly regularly to the airport, including Frontier, United, Continental, Alaska, and American Airlines. Most of the year, though, the only way that passengers can get to the city by air is by changing flights in Denver before flying to Aspen, and vice versa. There are also only 2 airlines that fly from Denver most of year: Frontier and United Airlines. In contrast, during the holiday season, when most tourists arrive, the rest of the previously mentioned airlines fly into Aspen. These even have direct flights to and from Chicago-O’Hare, Houston-Intercontinental, Los Angeles, and San Francisco airports. In addition, the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport gets so busy and filled with commercial airplanes and private jets that some planes have to land and be parked in nearby airports. Land transportation from those other airports into Aspen is provided by Airport Shuttles Taxis and other ground transportation.

Aspen Ground transportation

Even though the Aspen/Snowmass Airport is relatively small, it provides convenience to passengers in the form of guest services, restaurants, gift shops, and various transportation options to and from the airport. In fact, there are six car rental companies operating in the airport and there is also a bus service (the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority) that provides free transport within Aspen (including the airport).

Accessibility is one of the key features that make a place a holiday vacationer’s dream. Having the Aspen/Snowmass Airport makes sure that each tourist in the city gets to start his or her vacation conveniently.
